The final stage in our closely followed saga! Here is an abridged version of the boulder story so far:-

Disney (through one of their contractors) were stealing real boulders from a pristine river bed on Lantau Island to use in the new Disney project somewhere. They were trashing the river bed that they were stealing the boulders from in the process.

Initially everything was covered up but the Green Lantau Association lobbied hard to bring the facts to light. Eventually Govt were forced to make changes in the way projects are run in the NT, and CED was censured by the Ombudsman….

Let this be a warning to all developers and utility companies who seek to work on Lantau. A few well directed letters do sometimes bring results!! Progress in the restoration of the Tung Chung Stream is really good - <<click here>>

Four convicted for destruction of Tung Chung river

Staff reporter
April 20, 2005

(Standard)

The District Court Tuesday convicted four people involved in the illegal excavation of rocks from Tung Chung river.

Deputy Judge Andrew Chan remanded the defendants in custody for sentencing on May 3.

They were Tung Chung Rural Committee chairman Law Kam-fai, 63; Wong Yat-wah, 52, operator of Tung Po Engineering Co; committee vice-chairman Li Kwai-mo, 62; and committee secretary Mok Kwong-ming.

Law and Wong were Monday found guilty on one count of conspiracy to defraud.

On Tuesday they were convicted of three other offences - conspiracy to steal, removal of stone from unleased land, and unauthorized excavations on unleased land.

Law, Li and Mok were each convicted on Tuesday of one count of conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice.

The case was brought by the Independent Commission Against Corruption after investigations into the illegal excavation of rocks from Tung Chung river.

The court heard that Law and Wong had conspired to defraud the government which, on discovering environmental damage caused by the removal of boulders from Tung Chung river, had launched an inquiry.

The two had falsely claimed that the rural committee had instructed Wong to carry out a flood prevention project on the river.

They also claimed that the dredging work carried out in the river was done for flood mitigation, and that the rocks excavated would be used to construct a breakwater.

The court also heard that Law, Li and Mok had conspired together, and with other persons, to falsely represent to the police that Wong was authorized by the committee to excavate rocks from Tung Chung river.

Law and Wong were also convicted of removing stones from unleased land without a permit and excavating without a permit.

The offences took place between August and December 2003.
