Knowledge is very important. Imagine what life would be like without it; imagine a world inhabited by nothing but blonds. As Dan Quayle once said, “What a waste it is to lose one’s mind or not to have a mind is very wasteful.” What he meant of course is that unlike Bill Clinton, he did inhale. What goes for occupants of the White House goes for organizations as well; intellectual capital shouldn’t be squandered.

The term the gurus use for this concept is “Knowledge Management”. To illustrate, visualize the knowledge of your organization as a handful of peanuts spread around your favourite bar. The room is crowded with Chardonnay sipping poofters with one real man propping up the end of the bar – his beer, overhanging belly and an expanding puddle of drool arrayed on the counter top in front of him. Knowledge Management is about collecting all those nuts in a bowl and getting them to the person who can make best use of them – our hero with the Carlsberg and the slight odour of festering turnips.

If you want to learn more about this exciting field you can hang around the Funky Mule or you can simply attend the launch of the Association for Project Management’s “Guide to Knowledge Management” at the Hong Kong Yacht Club starting at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, 24 May. Real men only please.
