The
Hong Kong Construction Industry Institute held forum on research
ideas and directions for its members in the morning of (Saturday)
March 6 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The forum was organized
by the Research Committee, led by Professor Albert Chan, to pool
members’ resources with a view to gauging industry needs in
order to set the future direction of CII-HK’s research efforts
CII-HK aims to draw up research plans for the immediate future.
The forum marks the beginning of an ongoing process.
The
forum ran in an informal but constructive and participative atmosphere.
There were over twenty participants coming from fifteen member organizations
covering six major disciplines of the industry. Acknowledging CII-HK
Executive Director Nicolas Yeung’s message in his opening
remarks that research is the prime driver for innovation and continuous
improvement, participants engaged freely and enthusiastically in
cross-disciplined group discussion. At the end of the session, the
following themes emerged as the most prominent ones: -
(a)
Repair and maintenance for existing buildings;
(b)
Creating a common platform for construction IT;
(c)
Prefabrication of building components and constructability;
(d)
Safety, particulars working at height for building maintenance;
and
(e)
Best practice for sustainable design.
These
themes will form the basis of CII-HK’s future research direction.
