1. Heritage zone plea for Kowloon City

1. Heritage zone plea for Kowloon City

A newly formed green group has proposed building a cultural and heritage zone in Kowloon City in an attempt to stimulate tourism and the economy. The Green Hong Kong Organisation has called for the Government to preserve the area for its unique historic and cultural identity. "The Kowloon Walled City had been the only Chinese territory in Hong Kong which was never ceded or leased to the British," said legislator and group member Chan Yuen-han. "It has a history of 600 years and is the only remains of the legacy of Hong Kong's troubled past." The group also urged the authorities to provide a venue for small businesses. Ms Chan said they had forwarded the proposal to the Government, which had showed an interest in the idea. Under the proposal, a theme plaza called the Kowloon Festive Market, combining a shopping mall and a transport centre, would be built inside the Walled City. Opposite, and close to the waterfront, the old Dragon Ford Pavilion, built in 1875 and demolished in 1928, would be reconstructed. A boulevard would link the two. A Chinese-styled covered walkway between Nga Tsin Wai Village and the Walled City would also be built.
