1. It's almost time to go: Wu Keith
Wallis, The Standard 14 April 2003 Gordon
Wu, the chairman of the Port and Maritime Board and feisty arch-advocate of more
and better infrastructure links with the Pearl River Delta, says the time is nearing
when he will step aside and retire. Wu,
67, has already handed over the day-to-day running of Hopewell Holdings to his
son Thomas and says he will take the final step ``probably in a couple of years''. ``There
are two options - fast women and slow horses,'' Wu joked as he looked beyond full-time
work. Until then
though he will keep battling officialdom with his pet projects - a Pearl River
bridge between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, and a bridge and tunnel link between
Tuen Mun and Chek Lap Kok airport. ``We have a very nice airport. Are we taking
good advantage of the airport? I don't think so,'' he says. ``If you look at the
access, how do we access Chek Lap Kok? We access it via a cul-de-sac. It's a dead-end
street. My concept is very simple. Make Hong Kong a logistics centre, so that
a lot of the suppliers vying for the Chinese market are stationed here to take
advantage of the duty-free status.'' |
