1 Junk Bay bridge in pipeline
STAFF REPORTER, The Standard 16 July 2007
Hong Kong is set to get another landmark in the form of a bridge across Junk Bay in Tseung Kwan O, a senior government engineer said.
The bridge - a dual two-lane cable- supported structure - will form part of the road system extending from Dream City - a residential project being built on top of a MTR station in the district's south - to the proposed Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin tunnel.
Director of Civil Engineering and Development John Chai Sung-veng said development density in south Tseung Kwan O will be cut to make the district more spacious while the bridge will be built to improve its transport network.
He said the Tseung Kwan O new town was developed at a time when there was very strong demand for housing and as a result, its northern part is densely built with closely packed high- rise buildings.
"We have plans for developing Tseung Kwan O south. Apart from reducing development density, we have also planned for developments there to adopt a `stepped height' building profile to the waterfront to make the whole area appear less packed," Chai said.
"On transport infrastructure, we're going to build a link over Junk Bay. This will be a featured bridge for Tseung Kwan O new town in the form of a cable-supported structure."
Chai said the department has been tasked with providing greening master plans for different districts.
"These plans are not just for finding empty spaces on which to put plants and flowers. They are more robust, strategic and sustainable projects."
