Plan to sell surplus flats as quarters for civil servants
1. Plan to sell surplus flats as quarters for civil servants
The Housing Authority is proposing that some of the 12,000 subsidised flats that
will be left vacant by the Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) freeze be sold as quarters
for civil servants. Other options proposed by the authority to dispose of the
surplus flats during the 10-month HOS sales' suspension include renting out the
units and selling them to property developers. The proposals, presented at an
informal brainstorming session yesterday, would be put into practice only after
the freeze had been approved by the authority at its regular meeting next month,
authority member Wong Kwun said. Secretary for Housing Dominic Wong Shing-wah
told a Legislative Council meeting on Monday that the freeze was not a government
order, but rather a suggestion that was still subject to the authority's approval.
People's Council on Housing Policy chairwoman Virginia Ip Chiu-ping said it was
not feasible to sell the flats to the government, adding the rental option appeared
to the only feasible method. [Source:
