1 Heritage conservation gets Tsang's seal of approval
STAFF REPORTER, The Standard, 28 September 2007

Hong Kong will continue its endeavors in heritage conservation by protecting the environment and upgrading support facilities to make North District more vibrant, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said.

His comments yesterday were made during a visit to the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail in Fan Ling, which has unique historical significance.

Noting that community concern about heritage conservation was rising, Tsang said the restoration work at Lung Yeuk Tau had been progressing well, facilitating the conservation of the unique buildings on the trail while protecting the customs and cultural values of the people.

Lung Yeuk Tau is the home of one of the largest New Territories clans, the Tangs. The hall was originally built in the early 16th century to honor the founding ancestor, Tang Chung-ling. Its decorations display superb craftsmanship and it was declared a monument in 1997.

At Wing Ning Tsuen, Tsang saw how upgrading work at Lung Yeuk Tau, completed last October, has benefited residents and tourists. The project included paving the uneven floor, building a drainage system and constructing a Chinese-style pavilion.

Tsang also visited a farm managed and operated by around 100 senior citizens keen on organic farming.

Tsang commended the concept which, he said, allows for the meaningful use of rural land, encourages a healthy, environmentally friendly lifestyle and actively engages the elderly.
