Message Hong Kong Lek Yuen Estate and Sha Kok Estate short-listed by the annual RICS Awards 2007
For the first time, HK project is short-listed into this prestigious global award program
RICS Awards announces the 52 short-listed international projects, with one of the nominees coming from Hong Kong. The prestigious Awards, in its 17th year, shine a light on the greatness of building projects, regardless of size, budget, grandeur or location. This major award scheme gives RICS an opportunity to promote best practice in the industry, and the industry an opportunity to recognise and applaud the talents of the industry, not just the winners.
This year, the Awards received a record 298 entries, representing an increase on 2006 of 14 per cent..
These finalists, determined through regional heats, now compete for the overall category winners in
Building Conservation, Regeneration, Sustainability and Community Benefit.
The finalist from Hong Kong, belongs to the Regeneration Category, is the Lek Yuen Estate and Sha Kok Estate along the Shing Mun River in Shatin. Undertaken by the Hong Kong Housing Authority, massive regeneration work has been done with these two public housing estates with an aim to restore a more pleasant living environment for the residents. Regeneration works include re-roofing, reinforcing defective concrete pavement and recreational facilities and large-scale redecoration.
Mr. David Tse, panel judge of RICS Awards 2007 and also Chairman of RICS (HK), commented, ?We are very delighted to see such an interesting project being short-listed for RICS Awards. After the creative facelift and renovation, the estates are revitalized and given a clear sense of identity.?
Mr. Roger Nissim, another panel judge of RICS Awards 2007, further commented, ?Both estates had refurbished the building facilities to enhance easy access for the disabled individuals by installation of ramps, tactile paths, additional railings and Braille on lift buttons. Now more contemporary playground facilities and Pebble Walk have also been introduced. All these recreational facilities are readily accessible and open for the residents in the neighbourhood.?
With all the impressive work being done, these two estates have received a wide range of community and media supports, among them include schools, mutual aid committees and also District Council Members.
